Annabelle’s eyes showed a glimmer of light. “The necklace is yours, Thelma. I do not wish to steal it from you.”

“But, you said . . .”

“You must help me.”

“How do you know my name? I don’t understand this place. Where are we?” asked Thelma.

“I’ve seen you, and I know you. But as for where we are, that I do not know.”

“But don’t you live here?” Thelma’s confusion only grew as they continued to talk.

“One doesn’t live here. Here one is kept from life. And from death. I have been here for many years. There is much that you need to understand.”

“I came here to get my dad, Annabelle. He doesn’t belong here—I’ve got to get him home.”

“Home.” Annabelle sighed. “I want to go home too.”

Annabelle stood up, steel in her voice. “You may not have him yet. Not until you help me. I’m sorry.”

Thelma leaned back in her creaky seat.

“This isn’t fair,” she said.

“No.” Annabelle took her seat. “Not fair in the least.” She looked at Thelma with intensity. “But you have no choice.”

“OK,” Thelma said.

Annabelle took a deep breath and began.
